Last week, I wrote about what high school students who hope to become doctors can and should be doing now. Over the past several weeks, I have invested time and effort learning about the paths to medical school and compiling, what will be, the most comprehensive list available of BS-MD and other early acceptance medical programs. Additionally, I have spoken to students who are currently in a BS-MD program and hope to post interviews in the coming weeks.

While I have learned a lot that I am excited to share, be forewarned, BS-MD Programs are complex, highly nuanced, and lack procedural and terminological consistency.

Essentially, BS-MD Programs are programs that accept high school students into college and medical school simultaneously. In other words, provided students maintain certain eligibility criteria, those accepted into BS-MD Programs are guaranteed admission into medical school. While that seems straightforward enough, the reality is, it is not in the least bit straightforward. In fact, colleges and medical schools can’t even agree on how to spell pre-med. Or is it premed? 🤔

Above all else, know yourself and be realistic. Don’t put all your eggs in the BS-MD basket, rather understand what such programs are and what they are not. Set yourself up for success by choosing the right path and having a solid back-up plan to BS-MD.

Start planning in middle school. Doing so will not only help you become a competitive BS-MD candidate but will also encourage the mindset and attributes required of those planning to devote their lives to helping others in the medical field.

BS-MD programs are just one path to becoming a doctor and they are certainly not for everyone. While they are exceedingly competitive, students with the grades, test scores, and other qualities that make for a competitive BS-MD candidate who don’t get accepted into a program should feel confident that they have what it takes to get into medical school
